Lecture Introduction

Lecture Introduction

Boundaries are essential for our emotional and relational well-being; unfortunately, they are often overlooked. The brain constantly filters stimuli, distinguishes self from others, and modulates responses through networks involving the prefrontal cortex and limbic system. When these internal boundaries are unclear or overwhelmed, it can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, or difficulty maintaining a stable sense of self in demanding clinical environments.

Across many cultures (including Taiwan), a broader honor–shame framework places strong emphasis on social reputation, family expectations, and the avoidance of disgrace—all of which may complicate the formation of healthy emotional and relational boundaries. The pressure to preserve harmony, maintain “face,” and fulfill relational obligations often leads individuals to suppress personal needs, avoid confrontation, or overextend themselves for others. As a result, relational boundaries are frequently blurred or breached—not necessarily out of ill intent, but because cultural patterns subtly discourage clear limits and direct communication.

For biomedical students, developing emotional and relational boundaries is not optional—it is foundational. Whether interacting with patients, colleagues, family, and most importantly, with ourselves, the ability to maintain empathy without losing oneself is critical. This workshop invites you to explore how boundaries support resilience, clarify relationships, and ultimately enable you to care for others without neglecting your own well-being.

Dr. Tu's previous research spans a range of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Huntington's disease, aiming to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms underlying these conditions. Some of his works have contributed to the ongoing efforts to develop new treatments. He has also published and co-authored multiple papers on brain tumor research.

Dr. Chiu's previous research involved creating mouse models for heart diseases related to abnormalities in lipid metabolism, which have become important tools for understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases and for developing new treatments.
